Antonio Abdias Chaves is a landless rural worker who has been encamped in the Chico Mendes encampment outside Recife, Pernambuco for more than a year. While the members of the Rural Landless Workers Movement (MST) wait for the government to recognize their claims to the abandoned farm land they have occupied, they have been growing food (Antonio planted a crop of lettuce) and attending school (where Antonio is learning to read and write).Photos by Jake Miller for Grassroots International
