Mixe Peoples’ Services (Ser Mixe)

Mixe Peoples’ Services (SER Mixe) is an indigenous organization serving the Mixe people in the Mixe region of Oaxaca, which extends across 19 municipalities in the northwestern part of the state and includes remote communities in varied topographical and ecological zones. The Mixes number about 130,000.

SER Mixe promotes the strengthening of collective land rights and supports the recognition of the Mixe people as an autonomous nation with the right to their own territory, culture and identity.

To do this, SER Mixe currently works in legal affairs, economic development and culture, and public policy and education with a special focus on women. One of their economic development projects involves building roads for remote Mixe communities to get access to markets, hospitals and other services.

As a non-governmental indigenous social organization, SER Mixe is supported by organizations of the different communities of Mixe people including: local organizations, working groups that cover 17 communities and 29 other working groups. Additionally, professionals, social researchers and technical advisors support the organization’s work. SER Mixe is active in the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) and is connected to the international indigenous movement through its participation in the Indigenous Information Network.
